The regional Swedish city of Mariestad and Warrnambool City Council have made a formal commitment to share renewable energy ideas, knowledge and research.

A delegation from Sweden – including the Mariestad Mayor Johan Abrahamsson – is visiting Warrnambool to share insights on Mariestad’s move away from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Both cities have signed a memorandum of understanding to share information on renewable energy initiatives, with Mariestad leading the way on the use of hydrogen to power vehicles and heat homes.

“What we have learnt about Mariestad is inspiring,” Warrnambool Mayor Tony Herbert said.

“Mariestad, like Warrnambool, is committed to becoming carbon neutral.

“The Mariestad community is tackling climate change through positive action and using renewable energy to generate hydrogen.

“Being able to store renewable energy means that clean energy is available around the clock.

“Mariestad, which has a population of 24,000 people, has shown that it is possible to take meaningful steps to transition away from fossil fuels.

“We have also been fortunate enough to hear insights from engineering firm Nilsson Energy, which has partnered with Mariestad to bring about the shift to renewables.”

Mr Abrahamsson said he was delighted to be invited to Warrnambool and was looking forward to an exchange of ideas to expand the use of renewable energy.

“Mariestad was keen to act on climate change. We believed we could start the move to using renewables ourselves. Our community – including schools and university - is behind this transition,” Mr Abrahamsson said.

“We have been able to demonstrate that it is possible for a regional city to lead the way.”

Mariestad has been declared a UNESCO model of sustainability.
