A Decent Proposal: A South West Pitch Night

News Article Date:
Friday, 22 March 2019

The perfect pitch could land a local entrepreneur a spot at an international summit and the chance to share in $100,000 in prizes.

Warrnambool has been chosen as one of only five regional cities to host a pitch night for the Nexus Jiangsu-Victoria Start-up Summit in China.

The pitch night will be held from 5.30pm until 7.30pm on April 3 at the Cally Hotel.

In a similar format to popular television show Shark Tank, entrepreneurs who believe they have a “China-ready” product will pitch their idea to a panel of judges.

The winner of the Warrnambool event will join the official Victorian delegation to the summit in May where they will take part in the Future Cities “Hackathon” and be introduced to potential investors, partners and business growth opportunities.

Warrnambool City Council Manager Economic Development Shaun Miller said that while participants would need to have a well-developed business idea, people at all stages of their business would benefit from attending.

“For those pitching, it’s a potentially life changing business opportunity that is coming to them in Warrnambool,” he said.

“Being able to speak persuasively about your business is vital if you are looking to attract outside investment, so if your business isn’t quite ready for this type of event yet, it’s still a great way to dip your toe and learn more about what makes a successful pitch.

“Warrnambool’s history as a place of innovation, as well as our position at the forefront of Australia-China relations has helped us secure this event over perhaps some larger cities.

“Warrnambool is a place that fosters great ideas, and I’m looking forward to seeing what is presented on the night.”

The event is free to attend. Anyone who pre-registers for free by searching “A Decent Proposal: A South West Pitch Night” at www.eventbrite.com will be entitled to a free drink on arrival.

If you would like to pitch your idea on the night, email ecodev [at] warrnambool [dot] vic [dot] gov [dot] au for more information.
