Liebig Street event drew crowds, generated business

News Article Date:

The festive season celebration, A Very Liebig Christmas, not only attracted a huge crowd, it became the biggest spending day outside Easter and Christmas holiday periods.

On November 30 last year Liebig Street traders and the Council ushered in the festive season with the new event that showcased the recently renewed southern section of Liebig Street and featured music, street performers and special attractions for young people.

The day recorded a retail spend in excess of $1.5 million in Warrnambool.

Many traders opened late or brought trade on to the footpaths, adding to the appeal of the event.

“The enthusiasm of traders helped generate great excitement among Warrnambool residents who came out in droves to enjoy a wonderful atmosphere that continued into the night with the switching on of new Christmas lights along Liebig Street,” Mayor Cr Tony Herbert said.

“We know that the crowds and trader involvement translated to a positive financial result with spending up on the corresponding evening the previous two years.”

Total transactions were up by 1,880 (5.1 per cent) from the corresponding Friday in 2017, there was a 38 per cent increasing in dining and entertainment and an 85 per cent increase in clothing transactions.

“It was a great outcome – Warrnambool people and visitors had a wonderful time and the extra effort made by participating retailers was rewarded at the till,” Cr Herbert said.
