Move for a Better World

News Article Date:
Tuesday, 12 March 2019

You can help win fitness equipment for the Parkinson’s Victoria Warrnambool Support Group just by doing your normal exercise routine.

AquaZone is one of over 1000 fitness facilities in 29 countries participating in the Move for a Better World campaign, but you don’t need to be an AquaZone member to get involved.

The campaign is designed to get communities active by participants “donating” their activity towards a social cause.

Anyone with their own heart rate monitor (including those on smartwatches and fitness trackers) can join in. All of AquaZone’s exercise machines are also capable of logging and contributing your exercise.

Parkinson’s Support group member Andrew Suggett said that if successful, the new exercise equipment would either be installed in residential care facilities or temporarily in the homes of people with Parkinson’s.

"Exercise is the second best thing to do behind taking medication for Parkinson's. It really does help to get out and be active," he said.

“To go to a gym or begin exercising, for some people, it can be a bit daunting. So this makes it a bit easier for them to get started.”

AquaZone manager Ray Smith said that winning fitness equipment via the campaign wouldn’t be easy, but he believed it could be done.

“This is a global competition, so we’re competing against gyms in Europe that have membership bases well into the thousands,” he said.

“Where Warrnambool has an advantage is our community spirit.

“We potentially have more than 35,000 people who could donate even just a few minutes each.”

Move for a Better World runs from March 11-31.
