A whaleboat crew in action

South West Regatta this weekend

News Article Date:
Thursday, 28 February 2019

There will be a definite sense of oar on the Hopkins River this weekend, with the annual South West Regatta set to take place.

The regatta will see the Victorian St Ayles Skiff Championships contested on Saturday March 2 (9.30am – 4pm) while the Australian Whale Boat Championships will be held on Sunday March 3 (9.30am – 3pm).

Skiffs and whaleboats are both wooden boats with crews of rowers. Whale boat teams consist of six people – five rowers and a sweep.

Skiffs are smaller and lighter than whale boats and require four rowers and a coxswain.

The regatta will see more than 160 people compete, with teams travelling from Tasmania, South Australia and across Victoria to take part.

There are plenty of great vantage points on the western side of the river near Proudfoots.

The Hopkins River will be closed to vessels not taking part in the regatta between the Hopkins River Bridge and Bostock Street.

The exclusion zone will be in effect from 9am – 5pm on Saturday 2 March and Sunday 3 March 2019.
